NYC Wine & Food Fest Burger Bash 2009 Recap

October 10, 2009

What an unbelievable night beneath the Brooklyn Bridge. Easy to say that I put down somewhere between 10-15 burgers last night! In all honesty quality was great all around, but a couple stood out above the rest. Congrats to Spike Mendelsohn for his second straight win. Personally, I credit his cheerleaders.

A great culinary event for a great cause! Looking forward to 2010… for now though, I’m off to eat a salad.

Economy apparently not affecting Wing Bowl

January 29, 2009

While tooling around on Stubhub yesterday, I was shocked to find, amidst tickets for concerts, theater and global sporting events… a category for competitive eating!

Between the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog contest and various plugs on the Food Network, Travel Channel, FOX, etc., competitive eating has obviously been elevated to a national stage. Personally, I would never dream of participating for two reasons:

  1. My passion for actually enjoying what I eat
  2. Because no matter how much I think I can eat, I know that I would be so outmatched that the Black Widow herself may actually try to swallow me whole.

It’s just one thing I never thought I would see… Scalped tickets for a competitive eating event??? The Wing Bowl, one of the world’s most coveted eating titles, happened to be the featured event of the day. It’s simply amazing… a price mark-up, based solely on demand, to watch a people suck the marrow from tiny bones, especially in a time of wing crisis!

Don’t get me wrong, I love me some wings. You can typically find me elbow deep in a bucket every Tuesday night at the Black Bear in Hoboken… but seriously, I don’t get the appeal in trekking to the Wachovia Center (a major sports venue, home to the Flyers and 76ers) to watch people eat. I’d rather take the ride to go to Pat’s/Jim’s for a steak.

Upon sharing this story with friends, I was met with blank stares… shocked that I actually doubted the intrigue of attending the Wing Bowl… Maybe it’s time to reconsider? I’ll see you there, Wags!

Who needs 2?

Is this really the way the cookie would crumble?

While watching yesterday’s NFL playoff games I was summonsed by a commercial to ask myself a question for the ages…

Who would win in a contest of eating Double Stuffed Oreos?

I got winner...

I got winner...

The Mannings vs. The Williams

C’mon, are you serious?

  • The Manning brothers, Peyton and Eli, of Super Bowl (and more recently exiting the playoffs early) fame
  • The Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, whose skills,  in addition to the the short skirts of Anna Kournikova, can be personally thanked for the rise in women’s tennis

Seriously though, these aren’t the athletes I would choose in an eating competition.  Below, I have compiled a list of my top 5 eating patners from the wide world of sports… The list is with all due respect to Joey Chestnut, Kobayashi and all the annual Nathan’s competitors.

5. Michael Phelps – plain and simple….you eat 12,000 calories a day, you earn a spot on my chow squad

4. T.O. – the guy stops mid-game to eat… Get’cha popcorn ready

3. Willian “Refridgerator” Perry – read the name, ’nuff said

2. John Daly – put him on a course, sweating and drinking beer to expand the stomach for 5 hours… I guarantee he can pack it away

1. Tony Siragusa – hmmm… The Goose is Jersey born, 340 lbs and owns a fine chain of Jersey Rib houses (Tiffany’s)? Bring it Manning ladies…

I still can’t tell if I care for these ads, I suppose I will find out on 1.18.09. Hey Peyton and Eli, perhaps you could have planned to be busy that day. Maybe helping lead your team to the Super Bowl???
